Herkimer's Bateaux Coy. (cont'd) |
2007 saw Herkimer's acquire a 31' 1776 Plan Admiralty bateau from the Friends of Fort George. The vessel which was started in 1996 had been in Park's Canada Storage for the past 5 years. The members of Herkimer's along with some friends of the Unit funded and finished the vessel and appropriately named her the "Thunderer". The name comes from a British radeau ( floating gun platflorm ) in the Revolution as well the term sometime used to describe her home in the Bay of Quinte ( " Thunder On The Reach" )/. She packs ample firepower with a bow mounted naval carriage and two 1lb. swivels guns that live up to her name. It takes a crew of 8 -10 to handle her two plus tons. In 2009 Herkimer's grew once again with the purchase of the 31' Mohawk Valley Bateau " Wolfe" from the Thousand Island River Heritage Society. The "Wolfe " is the big sister of the "Black Snake " and with some tender loving care saw action at the 225th Anniversary of the United Empire Loyalist Landing in Adolphustown and Loyalist Days in Prescott. Captain of Batteaux, Brandt Zätterberg is a descendant of Nicholas Peterson, a veteran of the Defence of the Blockhouse at Bergen Wood, New Jersey. On September 29th, 1787 Nicholas Peterson made a claim for losses that included “a boat which was cut to pieces by the Rebels because he used it for carrying Provisions to the King’s Army in 1776.”
